CAR MODEL:
MERCEDES-BENZ V-CLASS (1996 - )
TYPE:
5-Door MPV.
SIZE:
4660 x 1880
RELIABILITY:
Generally very tough and reliable: Well built but interiors can get tatty. Once again, Mercedes service history all important.

HISTORY:
NOV 1996 V230 Trend, Fashion and Ambient 6-seater multi purpose front wheel drive Estates launched with 143 bhp engine, 5-speed gearbox on optional 4-speed automatic, power assisted steering, anti-lock brakes, electronic traction control. Equipment: twin airbags, heated electric mirrors, electric windows, pneumatic rear suspension, roof rails, fog lamps, remote central locking and a table. Ambiente also has leather trim, alloy wheels and a fridge. 7-seater layout optional. APR 1998 V280 Ambiente (174 bhp) launched. Revisions: standard air conditioning and radio cassette player on V230 models; 16" alloy wheels, standard automatic transmission and cruise control on V230 Ambient. MAR 1999 V220 CDi (121 bhp) common rail diesel launched. Range revisions: new grille, side skirts, bumpers and door handles in body colour, new seat trims and instrument packs.
COMMENTS:
The van origins are far too obvious in Mercedes foray into the MPV market. It is frankly cumbersome and unrefined. Comfy seating but not adaptable make it a school run special rather than a serious contender in the MPV sector.
